How to Resize Images in iPhoto

How to Resize Images in iPhoto thumbnail
Resize the photo before posting it or sending it out.

IPhoto lets you manage, browse and retouch your digital photos. However, the size of the images can become cumbersome if you want to post, email, text or share the image. Rather than expecting the recipient of your image to scroll around to see what you've forwarded, resize the image prior to sending it. With iPhoto, select a pre-determined size option, customize the size or select a format with the JPEG file extension.

Instructions

    • 1

Open iPhoto. From your library, select the photo to resize. Double-click on the selected photo.

    • 2

To email the file, click "Share," and then "Email." Select the size of the photo, choosing among small, medium, large or actual size. Choose a template to use for the email. The file size displays below a preview of the email you're sending.

    • 3

To modify the size for other media, select “File,” and then “Export.” Alternately, press "Ctrl-Shift-E."

    • 4

Select the format for exporting the file. Decide among small, medium, large or a custom size. Alternately, select “JPG” quality and choose low, medium, high or max from the drop-down menu.

    • 5

Click "Export" to export the photo to your Mac as well as the file location, and then click "OK." Use the exported, smaller file to include in an email or post to your favorite social network.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Classic template enables you to see the file size in the preview pane as you change the size of the photo.

  • Because the resizing runs on pixel size, as opposed to inches, it may take a few tries to get the exact size you're looking for unless you are familiar with pixels or know the exact size you need the photo to be.
