How to Open a School

There are many reasons you might want to open a school. You may want to offer more religion, a more challenging curriculum for gifted students or a more individualized curriculum for challenged and disabled students. In some states, parents must start their own school to homeschool their children.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the subjects and grade levels your school will teach. Will you offer music, art, computers, woodworking or other extracurricular activities?

    • 2

Learn the requirements of your state or territory before starting. You must do everything possible to stay within legal bounds. Private schools may want to consider hiring a lawyer for this.

    • 3

      Write your business plan.

    • 4

Fill out the required paperwork as required by your state law. Remember to file your nonprofit paperwork, as well, if your school qualifies as a nonprofit.

    • 5

Apply for grants and loans. Grants can be a great resource when it comes to funding your school.

    • 6

Determine qualifications for teachers and administrators, if applicable. Some states outline these requirements for you, and of course, this doesn't apply to home schools.

    • 7

Begin the teacher interview process. Hire only the teachers you feel will provide your students with the best education.

    • 8

Decide upon the educational programs and texts to be used for each subject. It's best to include your teachers in this process. A happy teacher makes for happy, high-performing students.

    • 9

Based on a ratio of no more than 25 students per class, decide how many students your school can accommodate. Classes with challenged children should use a much smaller student-to-teacher ratio.

    • 10

Rent or purchase a building in which to house your school based on your projected student count.

    • 11

Decide on the school calendar, enrollment requirements and procedures for your school with the help of your teachers and administrators. Develop a disciplinary protocol, dress code and code of conduct for teachers and students at this time, as well.

    • 12

Write the school brochure, student handbook and marketing materials.

    • 13

Advertise your school in newspapers, magazines, daycare centers and other places where parents of school-aged children will see your ads. Begin accepting enrollment.

    • 14

Order text books and room supplies, if you haven't done so already.

    • 15

Organize some sort of grand opening celebration a few weeks before school is to start.
