    • Guests
    • Decorations
    • Invitations
    • Grill

Plan exactly which day during the weekend you would like to hold your party. This is crucial during the summer and fall months as calendars and schedules tend to fill quickly.

      • 2

Send out the invitations to your guest list or post the fliers at the office about four to six weeks in advance. You can email certain invitations if you are comfortable doing so. Include an RSVP by date, phone number and email information on the invitation as well. Pictures are always a fun inclusion if you will be printing your invitations on the computer. Otherwise, handwritten or poster type fliers are acceptable. Clearly spell out that your Labor Day Event is to be held outside.

Plan your activities. You can have games such as volleyball, horseshoes, kids games, cards, swimming (if there is a facility), baseball, basketball, tennis and dodge ball. Try to have activities that will appeal to all ages and specify this when inviting your guests to your Labor Day party.

Reserve your space. If you are having it in your home or an associate's then this is generally not a problem. Otherwise, if you have your party in a public place like a park, you will want to reserve a shelter so your guests can sit under cover if they choose. If you have it in the yard, rent or borrow a large tent and have enough tables and chairs on hand. Or you can have guests bring chairs if needed.

Provide the meat. You could even have a pig or chicken roast if you would like something special for your outdoor event. Many places will come and help you roast your meat. Have the guests bring side dishes. Coordinate according to last name or if you know people like to bring certain dishes, then allow that.

      • 6

Have a radio, CD player or MP3 player available for music. Allow the guests to bring CDs. If you are fortunate enough to know musicians or bands, ask them to perform.

      • 7

Share your memories. These can be pictures from your camera or printed pictures. Why not have your guests post favorite photos on a board and take them home when they leave. You can also have a DVD player, computer or TV available for videos. Often people who do not get together frequently enjoy watching videos or looking at photos or scrapbooks.

Provide cups, plates, napkins, beverages and silverware. Do not forget about the serving spoons, as many people will bring salads. You may want to have a cooler or refrigerator for leftovers or storage before the party.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Have a plan in case the weather does not cooperate.

    • Do not leave food sitting out for long periods of time.

    • Cover food when finished serving.

Looks like you've thought of everything needed for an outdoor party. I like the tip of assigning side dishes by last name groups. Good read!
