How to Treat Elders
How you treat seniors says a lot about you. Always respect your elders by not patronizing them or underestimating them. Remember, senior citizens have led full and interesting lives and deserve to be treated just like anyone else.

1
Give respect. We live in a somewhat ageist society in which young pop sensations are given more press time than 85-year-old living movie legends. Change your attitude and show more interest in older people and the advice they have to give you. Don't judge them physically as their inner self is infinitely richer than that of a younger person.
-
2
Get involved. Involvement can mean volunteering at a senior center, hanging with your grandfather on a regular basis, or simply choosing to go outside your normal social circle to befriend the woman who's 50, not 30.

3
Tap their potential. Seniors do slow down physically as they age and depending on the individual, some forgetfulness sets in. You'll be amazed at what you can learn from them and the good advice you can get. Ask them about their first love, how they met their spouse or the birth of a child and see how they light up. Find out their regrets and their mistakes to avoid making the same life errors.

4
Do sporty things. As seniors get older, they do slow down but exercise keeps them feeling young and healthy. Don't take Grandpa out for tackle football, but do suggest miniature golfing, swimming, walking and other lower impact sports.
-
5
Be equals. Remember, never talk down to an older person. Never be condescending when you see someone having difficulty crossing the street . It's wonderful to offer your help, but do it in a way that says "Hey, I know you might not need this, but the offer is here if you want to take advantage of it." Don't call a 60-year-old woman a "young lady." That's condescending, too. Think of everyone as just people and you will be fine.

Tips & Warnings
Don't overdo physical activity, but do get your grandparents out and moving. In addition to the physical benefits, the mental exercise will help tremendously.
