How to Read the Oil Dipstick in a Nissan Maxima

You should check your oil whenever you get gas to make sure your vehicle runs smoothly and efficiently. The Nissan Maxima uses marks on its dipstick so that owners can check their oil levels at a glance.

Instructions

    • 1

Park your Nissan Maxima on a level surface then open the hood by pulling the hood latch release.

    • 2

Look for the oil-measuring dipstick. A dipstick is a long metal measuring tool with a grip at the top end so you can pull it out of its sheath. This one is located toward the front of the vehicle slightly toward the passenger's side and has a "T" shaped handle.

    • 3

Grasp the handle at the top and gently pull the Nissan Maxima dipstick out of the sheath. Wipe it off with a rag or tissue to clean it.

    • 4

Notice the two markings on the dipstick labeled "L" (Low) and "H" (High). These mark the safety zone for the safe running of your engine.

    • 5

Slip the dipstick back into the sheath and pull it right out to get a clear reading. Look at the oil level on the dipstick without wiping it off.

    • 6

Make sure the oil level mark is between the two markings on the dipstick. If it is over the "H" marking, drain some oil. A level below "L" means you should add more oil until the level rises between the two markings.
