Step 1
DECIDE HOW MUCH YOU WANT TO MAKE
Decide how much you want to make on a monthly basis. Your goal will be to create as much of this "income" as possible through your economizing efforts.
Remember, you're ahead of the game because "savings" aren't taxed. If you save $200 on your grocery budget, that's an extra $200 in your pocket. You would actually have to earn $250 or more by working for someone else in order to take home $200 after taxes.
You'll also have the advantage of no work related costs like commuting or special work clothes. -
Step 2
BRAINSTORM ALL THE AREAS WHERE YOU COULD SAVE MONEY
A great starting place is the food budget. Both eating out and grocery shopping are usually places where the average family could knock off a great deal of money.
Other areas to consider are fuel, utilities, clothing, and insurance. Any place you currently spend money is a potential way to save money. -
Step 3
BRAINSTORM ALL THE WAYS TO SAVE IN EACH AREA
Now that you have a list of general areas to save, start making a list of specific steps you could take in each area to save.
For instance under 'Food' you might list:
*Cooking at hoome more and eating out less
*Cooking and baking from scratch and eliminating convenience foods
*Using coupons
*Studying grocery store sales ads
etc.
Continue to brainstorm ideas in each area. The internet is full of ideas. Do a search for 'saving money' or 'frugal living'. You'll get more ideas than you could ever use. -
Step 4
START WORKING YOUR PLAN
Now that you have a list of areas to save, and ideas of ways to save in each of them, start working on your list. Remember, THIS IS NOW YOUR JOB so approach it that way. -
Step 5
MEASURE YOUR RESULTS
Were you able to cut your grocery bill from $600/month to $400? Did y ou find a way to cut $100 in your utility costs? Congratulations! You've just made $300 in your new work at home job!
Make sure you track your progress on a spreadsheet so that you can feel the fruits of your labor. Consider opening a savings account in which to place your earnings.
Keep learning and tweaking your system. As time goes on you'll find more and more ways to add to your household's bottom line.
