Instructions

  1. Make a Vignette!

    • 1

Open Photoshop Elements. (This example uses version 4.0). You will be working under the "Edit and Enhance Photos" module.

    • 2

Open a photo you would like to create a vignette around. The best ones to use are single-person portraits or head shots.

    • 3

Choose "Filter" from the main menu, then "Render," then "Lighting Effects."

    • 4

Grab the handle on the oval that appears on the picture in the dialog box. Position it how you would like the vignette to appear. The program will preview as you make changes. To darken the vignette area, slide the "Intensity" bar toward "Full." You can also enlarge the focal point by sliding the bar on "Focus" toward "Wide." When your changes are done, click OK.

Here's another way to get basically the same effect: In a new photo, select the Eliptical Marquee Tool from the toolbar and create an oval selection around your subject.

    • 7

Choose "Select" and "Feather" and key in 25 in the radius box for starters. (Be sure to experiment with other radius numbers after you're familiar with the process.)

    • 8

Go to "Select" and choose "Inverse." Then click "Edit" and "Fill Selection." From the "Use" drop-down box, select "Color."

    • 9

Now choose the color you would like your vignette to be. Yo can use the eye-dropper tool by mousing over the picture, as well.

    • 10

Click OK, deselect, and your colored vignette is done!
