1
Measure the distance from the ground floor to the loft and add twelve inches. This will be the length of your ladder beams. Cut out two ladder beams from 2X4 lumber pieces.

2
Cut out the rungs for your loft ladder. To do this you will need to first determine how many rungs you will need by dividing the total length of your ladder beams by ten inches. Round this number down and this will be the number of rungs you will need. Cut the rungs from a 2X4 piece of lumber in 18 inch segments.

Attach the rungs of your loft ladder to the ladder beams using two deck screws to secure each side of each rung to the ladder beams. Position the rungs so that when you look straight on at the ladder you so that you see the height of the run as four inches and the length of the rung as 18 inches.

Sand down your ladder and stain it with wood varnish. This will prevent dry rot and weathering from weakening the strength and stability of your loft ladder.
