Things You'll Need:
- patience
- computer
- self control
-
Step 1
Determine the type of vehicle you are looking for. For example, SUV, Truck, Compact, Sedan or fuel saver.
-
Step 2
Narrow your purchase plans to 3 specific vehicle models.
-
Step 3
Thorughly research those models on the internet. Use many sites such as vehix.com autos.msn.com or even pay for a 1 month subscription to consumer reports.
-
Step 4
Research any current rebates, cash incentives, or financing options before you go on the lot.
-
Step 5
After you have your 3 vehicles picked out visit each car dealer lot after hours to look at the outside and peek on the inside of the vehicles. Also this will tell you what the real sticker price is in your market. You should be ablet to pick exactly which vehicle you are interested in during this process.
-
Step 6
If you have a trade in research the value of it before going on to the lot. You can use www.kbb.com for kelly blue book values. This will give you an idea of what a fair trade is.
-
Step 7
Now you are ready to go to the lot. DO NOT let the pressure get to you. The odds are that if you walk away from a car it will be there tomorrow. Remember that no matter what they tell you.
-
Step 8
DO NOT purchase ANY extra warranties on a new vehicle. The only exception to this I would say is if they include all your oil changes and regular maintenance as part of the package. This warranties are often just not worth it. They are another profit margin for the dealer.
-
Step 9
Plan on spending a good 3-4 hours during this process at the dealer if you do it right. You need to take time to get a feel for what they are really willing to sell the care for before they tell you they cant help you and have a nice day. When you get to almost this point you know you are probably getting a fair deal.
-
Step 10
Make sure you drive your new car for a few years. If you dont you are throwing away money. Good Luck!
