How to Reel a Fishing Rod
A normal fishing rod is a simple yet complicated device. While the rod's function of casting and retrieving a hook is elementary, the mechanics behind it are complex. Thanks to these mechanics, you can easily bring your fish in once it is caught by properly using the reel. This small crank allows you to pull in the fish with the smallest amount of effort possible.

1
Hold the pole firmly with your left hand. Your right hand will be busy doing the actual reeling, so this will be the only way to maintain control of the rod. Choke up on the grip so that your hand is directly underneath the reel. This will give you the most leverage when holding the rod and pulling in a fish.

2
Take your right hand and pinch the small crank on the side of your fishing rod. This device is what you will use to bring the fish closer to you. It has a locking mechanism, so it will not rotate in the wrong direction on accident.

3
Leave the finger of your left hand off the button on the back of the reel. This button unlocks the reel and allows it to move in both directions. By holding this button down while reeling in, you allow the fish to pull the line in the other direction and lose any ground you may have gained.

4
Inspect the side of the reel to check that the lock is turned off. Some fishing rods have a lock on the reel that will not allow it to be cranked. This is normally a small button or switch that can be turned with your finger.

5
Turn the crank to reel in the fish. Depending on the size of the fish, the crank will be varying degrees of difficult to turn.
