Scrunchies (covered elastics for hair) can be made using a basic crochet stitch and some elastic. The colors and embelishments that you can use are unlimited. Whether you would like to decorate your child's hair, or tie back your own ponytail, they come in handy. Even a crochet beginner can make scrunchies.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Crochet yarn
  • Crochet hook
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • 1 1/2 inch elastic
  • Sewing thread
  • Sewing needle
  • Embellishments
  • Hot glue
  • Hot glue gun
  1. Step 1

Choose your yarn. Crochet yarn comes in many different colors and weights, so the look is up to you.

  2. Step 2

Crochet a chain approximately 7 inches in length, and using a single crochet stitch, crochet a width of approximately 1 1/2 inches. After you complete these crochet steps, knot the final loop.

  3. Step 3

Cut a piece of elastic about 4 inches in length. The elastic can be any color, just be sure that it is complementary to your yarn.

  4. Step 4

Stitch the elastic to the crocheted piece by starting at one end, and gathering the crocheted strip as you go, to end evenly with the length of the elastic at the other end.

  5. Step 5

Join both ends of the scrunchie together by stitching the two ends together. Decorate your scrunchie with beads, gems or any other embellishments by attaching them with some hot glue, if desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • Feel free to vary the crochet stitch to your skill level or interest, the steps are the same following the crocheting.
