Tying a flat ribbon bow is a simple and elegant way to add a little flair to any decorating ideas. By taking a regular bow and performing a few twists and ties, you will have a bow that looks complicated but is in fact quite simple to construct.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ribbon
  1. Step 1

Select a length of ribbon more than six inches but less than one foot in length and drape it over your scrapbook or where it will be tied. Take the left side over the right side then bring it underneath so half of the backside is showing and half of the front side is showing. Place your thumb firmly in the center of this cross. Take the upper left end that is upside down and flip it over your index finger, so it is facing the right way up.

  2. Step 2

Keep your thumb in place and take the lower right portion, which also has the backside facing up. Cross it over the piece that is over your index finger. Take that end and tuck it through the loop between your two fingers.

  3. Step 3

Pinch the loose knot with your index finger and thumb. Using your free hand, gently tug at the ends to slowly tighten the knot. Balance the tugs and flip the ribbon, so the patterned side is facing forward on all aspects.

  4. Step 4

Tug on both sides more tightly, focusing more on the right side than the left, until the bow is firm but not completely pulled tight. Pulling too far will result in a small, unappealing bow. The bow may need some slight adjustments to balance it out properly at this stage.

  5. Step 5

Trim the loose edges of the ribbon in order to properly balance the size to make it look presentable.
