The title of this article really should be "How to Replace a Surfboard Cable Modem That is Connected to a Netgear Wireless Router and Desktop Computer" but as that was such a long title, I opted to shorten it. When I realize the cable company was charging me a monthly fee for a dsl modem, I decided to buy my own and return theirs. Several Geeks recommended the "surfboard modem" so I bought it and it was so easy to connect, even I could do it! And I'm a novice. So, if you ever need to do the same, here goes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • 1 Surfboard Cable Modem
  • 2 Ethernet Cables
  • Installation CD
  • 1 wireless router
  1. Step 1

Connect the power cable to the surfboard modem. Insert your installation CD and follow the instructions.

  2. Step 2
    Connect the cables.
    Connect the cables.

Connect one end of the Ethernet Cable to the surfboard modem and the other end of the Ethernet cable to the router.(Follow the diagram on the bottom of the router. It shows exactly where each cable goes.)

  3. Step 3

Connect the DSL Internet coaxial cable to the surfboard modem.

  4. Step 4

Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to the router and the other end of the cable connection to the main computer.

  5. Step 5

Plug in all power cords. The surfboard should have 4 green lights and 1 orange standby light.

  6. Step 6

    Voila! You are connected.
