This article teaches you how to pick a door lock with everyday items you would find around your house. This article in no way endorses picking other people's locks, but it is a way to get into a room that you may have locked yourself out of.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paperclip
  • Coat hanger
  • Screwdriver
  • Bobby pins
  • Credit card/gift card
  1. Step 1

    A simple lock.

There are many types of locks. If the lock that you are dealing with is a simple lock, use a metal coat hanger or a paper clip. Simple locks just require pushing the release in with a paper clip or coat hanger. These are by far the easiest locks to pick because there are no keys required to get in and out of the room.

  2. Step 2
    A lock requiring a key.

If you are trying to pick a lock that requires a key, use a bobby pin and insert the two points of the bobby pin into the lock. Turn it, which simulates turning the key in the door. This should work, but on more modern locks you may have difficulty.

  3. Step 3

Another option is using a credit card. This option typically works on older, less complicated locks. Essentially, you take a credit card (or a gift card, or some card that is fairly disposable. It's probably a bad idea to use your No. 1 credit card) and slide it in the slot of the closed door. With some jiggling and tweaking, eventually the lock should release. This trick does not work on advanced locks that require keys. For more visual evidence, watch the YouTube video of it at the end of this article.

  4. Step 4

If none of these options work, there is always the option to call a locksmith, or take the door off its hinges. This is not recommended unless you absolutely need to get in the door, because it can cause damage.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you know what you are doing, or you can cause a lot of damage and potentially break door knobs.
  • Please do not pick locks on doors other than those in your own house, or on your own property.
