Newport Aquarium is a fascinating place to visit with family, friends or business associates. Located on the Kentucky/Ohio border just outside of Cincinnati, this aquarium is a jewel tucked away in a quaint downtown area filled with many entertainment options, including shops and unique restaurants. You could visit the aquarium in just a few hours or make it a stop on your next driving vacation. Here are a few ideas to help you enjoy your visit to the Newport Aquarium.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Plan your trip ahead of time. Call the museum (859) 261-7444 |or visit their website listed in Resources at the bottom of this article to ensure they are open during the hours you require. The hours vary by time of year, but they are open every day. You will need to arrive early to get a good place in line as you will be standing outside to purchase or show your tickets. You will move quicker through the line if you already have tickets.

  2. Step 2

Purchase tickets ahead of time at a local grocery store or online to save money or purchase a triple-play package. A triple-play package includes a riverboat cruise, admission to the aquarium and the Cincinnati Reds museum pass. This is only valid during the summer and fall months. If you cannot do either of those, consider getting a discount coupon from a local hotel and showing a AAA travel card if if you have one. This will save you money on admission fees to the aquarium, as they can be steep, especially for a family of four.

  3. Step 3

Go on less crowded days. Weekends and holidays tend to be packed and this could lessen your enjoyment of the museum. You will not be able to see exhibits as well and will have to wait in long lines for attractions. If you see a long line outside, it means there are just as many people inside. Consider coming back on a day where the line is shorter.

  4. Step 4

Make sure you eat before you visit the aquarium as the restaurant and gift shop does not appear until the end and you must visit the exhibits in order of appearance.

  5. Step 5

Get in line early for the Newport Aquarium's scuba diving show or you will not get a seat. This show is fascinating and free with your admission. It is held several times daily. You will be able to interact with a diver as he answers questions from the audience and you learn more about ocean life in the aquarium.

  6. Step 6

Attend a special event at the aquarium. Sign up for their email mailing list to find out when they will be held. There are several throughout the year. You can do this on the Newport Aquarium website.

  7. Step 7

Pet the sharks and rays at the Touch Pool in the shore gallery. Do this with caution. Young children probably should not participate.

  8. Step 8

View fish, piranha and different breeds of sharks, penguins and rays being fed or trained each day. Consult the website or signs throughout the aquarium for exact feeding times and details. This is something you will not soon forget. Bring your camera.

  9. Step 9

Look above and below you as you cross the walkways and bridges in the aquarium. You will find many creatures swimming on top and beneath you behind the glass and in tubes, tunnels and bridges. You may see aquarium life in a different light after this experience.

  10. Step 10

If you need accommodations, stay outside of the city, either in Kentucky or Ohio, to save money on hotel room rates. The closer you get to downtown, the higher the prices may become. Call ahead or go online to reserve your stay.

  11. Step 11

Parking is free on the street or is on the honor system at many lots close to the Newport aquarium and is not a problem. Follow the signs to get to the museum entrance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Tilt your camera to the side to take photos so the flash will not reflect back off of glass.
  • Set your camera to low-light conditions, as it is dark in most areas.
  • Purchase nectar to feed the birds.
  • Strollers will be very difficult, if not impossible, to move through the aquarium.
