It’s nice to know where your family came from. Ancestors may be long gone but that doesn’t mean you can’t start a family tree today. Having a family tree will be enjoyed not only by you and your family now but by future generations. In today’s world, special software makes it so easy to create your own tree. So you haven’t started a family tree because you do not want to pay for the software that companies charge for? There are companies that offer their software services for free. and you will see that they are very user friendly as well as completely private. Log on to Geni.com as an example of how to get a family tree for free.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Type your name and email as well as gender into the first box that appears on the Geni.com website. Click “add” and you will be prompted to add additional members of your family. You may want to get their permission first but you can bet they will be happy to see your hard work when it is all finished.

  2. Step 2

    Add additional family members to this tree. Start with your generation, such as: siblings, spouse and such. Then move on to children and work your way forward in time. Then move backward starting with your parents.

  3. Step 3

    Add a photo to individuals where there is one available. Ask family members to email them to you or they can give add it themselves after you give them your family password.

  4. Step 4

    Add personal information about each member such as: date of birth, date of death, email address, gender and current location. If you are unsure about the information, check with other family members or research it through sites that offer that service. You may have to pay for the service, however.

  5. Step 5

    Add extra photos and videos. This website not only offers a free family tree but you can upload photos and videos for your family to share with each other.

  6. Step 6

    Input the email of family members and click “invite.” By doing this Geni will be send an invitation to the family members you selected and ask them to participate.

  7. Step 7

    Print out your family tree. When you’re done with your family tree or in the midst of making it, you can print it out to see what it looks like on paper. This makes a great gift to other family members. Print it in color and frame it.

  • For women who have married, list their last name like this: Maiden-Married.
