How to Endorse a Check With a Stamp

Your endorsement or signature on the back of a check acts as your authorization, allowing the bank to release the appropriate funds to you. If you had to do this by hand every time, this might be tedious. That's where a stamp comes in handy.

Instructions

Order a rubber stamp. They can be obtained from office-supply stores at a relatively low cost. You’ll also want to purchase an ink pad, since you’ll have to apply ink to the stamp each time you use it to make sure you get clear results. Some stamps are self-inking, too.

Figure out what information you need on your stamp. If you’re getting a stamp for personal use on personal checks, you’ll only need your signature on the stamp. If you’re ordering a stamp for your business, you should add your title and the company name. If you want to truly make it official, you can include an account number, tax number, address or phone number on the stamp. Think of what you have to add whenever you endorse your checks by hand.

Make your mark on the correct part of the check. Endorse the reverse side of the check, in the area with the printed lines. Putting your endorsement in the right place allows your bank to process the check easily.

Add any further instructions you may desire. If your stamp doesn’t feature the command “For deposit only,” you’ll have to write it in the old-fashioned way, with a pen. (You should never use pencil on a legal document.)

Experiment on a piece of paper before you use the stamp for the first time, to make sure everything looks the way you want it. Apply the stamp by pressing it carefully into the check in the correct place.
