How to Treat Constipation in Dogs Naturally

An important part of being a responsible pet owner includes the task of making sure your dog is having regular bowel movements. Dogs can go 48 hours without having a bowel movement and have little more than some cramping or gas. If constipation lasts longer though, it can become serious. Here are some things to look for and remedies to try to provide some relief for your constipated pet.

1. Dietary fiber is one of the best remedies for constipation. It makes stools larger, which stimulates the colon to work harder and as it moves through the intestines, it absorbs a tremendous amount of water. Psyllium husks or flaxseeds are very high in fiber and can be easily added to your dog's food. Oat bran and unflavored Metamucil are also good sources of fiber. For all of these, give dogs 15 to 50 pounds a teaspoon in their food, and dogs over 50 pounds one tablespoon.

2. Regular exercise is not only good for overall health but it's essential to treat and prevent constipation. Exercise strengthens the abdominal muscles which helps to push stools out of the body. Most dogs need a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes twice per day to stay healthy and active.

3. Keeping your pet's emotions balanced is key to keeping their bodies balanced. Sometimes when dogs experience a lot of stress they will get constipated. There is a flower essence blend available in health food stores called Bach Rescue Remedy. Put a dropperful of the tincture in their water each day during high stress times or simply administer it directly to the dog by lifting up a part of the mouth skin on the lower jaw and dropping it next to the gum.

4. The constant straining of constipation can irritate the colon. A healing herb called slippery elm bark can help soothe it. Dilute 20 drops of slippery elm tincture in an ounce of filtered water and give your dog a dropper-full three times a day. Make sure to get alcohol free tinctures because the alcohol can upset the colon's balance.

5. When dogs are constipated, lubricating their insides can help stools travel easily through the intestine. Add one-half to one teaspoon of olive or safflower oil to your dog's food.

Tips & Warnings

• Constipation can be serious and need a veterinarian's attention. Some pets will begin vomiting when they can't have a bowel movement. See your vet immediately if this happens.
