How to Create a Newsletter Using Pagemaker
Creating your own newsletter is a quick and easy task if you use Adobe Pagemaker. Pagemaker allows you to easily assemble all the components you need to design your project and produce a quality newsletter. Here are some pointers to get you going.

1
Decide on a design. Do you want two columns or three? Do you want each column to be the same width? Will you number the pages on the top or the bottom? Do you want text to wrap around photographs? What fonts will you use for headlines and text? Will you use color in the newsletter? Try several sample designs to decide which layout works the best for your newsletter.

2
Open Pagemaker and click on “File” and “New” to open a new document (see Resources below). The document set-up box will pop up. Enter the number of pages you expect your newsletter to run. You can also set your margins in this box. Margins for your newsletter don’t have to be as wide as those for a letter. Try setting your left and right margins at .70 inches.

3
Begin by setting up your first page. Don’t set this page up on the master page as you will not want subsequent pages to look like the first page. If you are going to be creating a banner containing the name of your newsletter in Pagemaker, use the text tool and draw a text box that spans all columns. Enter your banner text. Select a font and text size. If you are importing your banner from another location on your computer, click on “File” and “Place” and scroll through your computer’s files to find the appropriate file.
-
4
Click on “Layout” and “Column Guides” to create the newsletter’s columns. A box will open and prompt you to enter the number of columns you desire. You will also need to enter a number for the amount of space you would like between the columns. Smaller numbers will create less space between the columns, while larger numbers will give you more space.
-
5
When you set up the remainder of the pages, you may want to use the master pages. Click on the “L” and/or “R” at the bottom left of the screen to access this area. Any information put on these pages will be the same on all of your pages except for the first one you created. Use master pages to standardize your newsletter by ensuring that each page contains the same number of columns and includes page numbers and identifying information at the same place on each page.

6
Use the “Place” function again to place your text. Click on “Type” and then “Alignment” to set the alignment for your newsletter. Justified text is use in many newsletters.
-
7
Use “Place” again to import photographs. You can choose how text will appear near photos by clicking on “Element” and “Text Wrap.” Be sure to click on the photograph first before attempting to select a wrap choice.

8
Proofread your newsletter and print it out. If you have a low budget, you may want to make photocopies of the newsletter. If you have a bigger budget, you may want to have your newsletter professionally printed.
