How to Get a Pistol Permit

The United States Constitution gives Americans the right to bear arms. However, each state has its own regulations and requirements for gun ownership. To own and carry a pistol, you have to get a permit, and though each state has its own rules getting a pistol permit, all states have the same general requirements.

Instructions

1. Go to a gun dealer or contact your local police department to begin the process. You must apply in person for a pistol permit.

2. Submit to a criminal background check and a full set of fingerprints. Some states also require that you have no history of mental health problems.

3. Attend a qualified gun safety class that teaches the knowledge, skills and attitude needed for safely handling firearms.

4. Receive a certificate of proficiency from the gun safety class and submit it with your application.

5. Wait, depending on which state you're from. There's a one week to three month waiting period from the application date to the issuance of the license.
