Collect and gather all kinds of buttons keeping your room design and color scheme in mind while you search for them. Get all different sizes and shapes to add more texture to the lampshade design. Buttons can be expensive when you have to buy a lot of them. Hit garage sales, flea markets and save them off of old clothing. Craft stores will also sometimes sell big jars of mixed buttons. If you are on a budget, it may take you awhile to collect enough buttons before you can start your button covered lampshade project.

Spread the buttons out on a table top or flat surface so you can see exactly what you have to use to decorate your button covered lampshade with.

Preheat the glue gun and load in the glue stick. Then put a small glob of hot glue on the bag of a button and stick it on the outer surface of the lampshade. Attach one button at a time with the hot glue but turn the shade as you work so you are spreading your button supply evenly as you go. Another way to apply them is to turn the light on once in awhile as you work so you can see how the buttons look with the lights on. The effect is different with the lights on and off.

Make sure you spread the same sized buttons around the surface of the lamp so there is variation all over the lampshade surface and all the same sized buttons are not on one section of the lampshade. That is unless that is part of your design plan. Leave open space between the buttons so they will show up well when you turn the lamp on.

For a finishing touch you can put matching colored bias tape or bric-a-brac trim all around the top and bottom edges of the lampshade.

Tips & Warnings
Be careful using the hot glue gun. Don’t touch the tip or set it down on an unprotected surface while you are working with it. Pull off any loose dangling strings of hot glue after they cool for a few seconds.
