When the ink needs to be refilled on your Dell Photo Printer 720, you will receive a pop-up message on your computer letting you know that it is time to change the cartridge. This notification will be for the black, color or both ink cartridges. Just follow these instructions to change the ink cartridge on your Dell 720 Photo Printer.

From Quick Guide: Ink Cartridges Guide
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Turn on your Dell Photo Printer 720 by pressing the "On" button on the right-hand side cover.

  2. Step 2

Lift the front cover on the printer. The ink cartridge carrier will move to the new ink cartridge loading position. Wait until the carriage stops moving before proceeding.

  3. Step 3

Press the tab on the ink cartridge lid to release the empty ink cartridge. If you are only changing the black ink cartridge, just press the black cartridge tab, which is black and located on the right. If you only need to change the color ink cartridge, only press the colored ink cartridge, which is most often blue or another color and is located on the left.

  4. Step 4

Remove the old ink cartridge by pulling up and forward.

  5. Step 5

Remove the sticker on the new ink cartridge. You must also remove the transparent tape from the back and bottom of the new ink cartridge.

  6. Step 6

Insert the new ink cartridge and snap the lid closed.

  7. Step 7

    Close the printer lid cover.

  8. Step 8

Go to the "Start Menu" on your computer. Click "Start," "All Programs," "Dell Printers," "Dell Photo Printer 720" and choose "Dell Printer Solution Center." Next click the "Maintenance Menu" item. Click "Install New Print Cartridge" and then "Next." Then choose the ink cartridge you installed--either black or color--and click "Next."

  9. Step 9

Continue with "Aligning Ink Cartridge." This step is necessary after installing a new cartridge to ensure that all the characters are properly formed and aligned after installing the new ink cartridge.

  10. Step 10

Go to the "Start Menu" on your computer. Again navigate to the "Dell Printer Solution Center," as described above. Next click the "Maintenance Menu" item and then "Align" to fix blurry edges. Click "Print. " You will now hear your printer making noises while the alignment pages print.

  11. Step 11

Look at the print alignment page that just printed. Choose the darkest arrow in each row and then enter that number under the arrow in the fields on the screen. After you have entered all fields, choose "OK." The new ink cartridge is now properly installed.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can use your printer with only one cartridge (black or color).
  • When inserting the ink cartridge, make sure it is secure in the holder.
  • To improve the life of your color cartridge and improve the speed of your printer, install both the color and ink cartridge simultaneously.
  • Dispose of the old ink cartridges in a plastic bag or take them to the nearest participating office supply store or drugstore for recycling.
