Fingernail biting is a common problem and a difficult habit to break. When you bite your fingernails you expose yourself the many germs found on your hands. Break the nasty habit once and for all. Learn to quit biting your fingernails for good.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use products that discourage the habit. There are many products available that help you quit biting your fingernails. Find them at local beauty stores. Most of them brush on like fingernail polish and leave a very bitter residue on your nails. The bitter taste left on your fingernails makes biting them less appealing.

  2. Step 2

Get fake nails. Fake fingernails are made of an acrylic substance that is difficult to bite. They create a great barrier between your natural nails and your mouth, and look great at the same time.

  3. Step 3

Try hypnosis. Hypnotists work with people trying to break all sorts of bad habits including fingernail biting. They hypnotize you to help subconsciously break the bad habit.

  4. Step 4

Motivate yourself to quit biting your fingernails with rewards. Set small goals. Give yourself a small reward if you make it through an entire day without biting your fingernails. Give yourself a bigger reward if you make it through an entire week without biting your fingernails. Reward yourself even more for longer periods of time with no nail biting.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wear gloves when you're at home. Gloves create a physical barrier and remind you not to bite your fingernails.

on 9/14/2008 Right, wear gloves at home. Try doing that for a day. What would keep you from biting when away from home. I quit by preventing the bite. A thin, clear custom made mouthpiece that I insert over my teeth when I get the urge to bite. It is hardly noticeable, and doesn't impair my speech. Find it at www.nailbitestopper.com
