Bamboo shoots are the tender young growth of the bamboo used in many Asian dishes. They have many nutritional benefits, like being low in calories and fat. They are also a good source of fiber and potassium. You can create healthy meals for your family by learning to cook with bamboo shoots.

  • Raw bamboo shoots or canned shoots
Step1
Learn to cook raw bamboo shoots to add to many recipes. Add raw bamboo shoots to a pot of boiling water and let them cook uncovered for 20 to 25 minutes. Use canned bamboo shoots as an alternative to fresh shoots.
Step2
Add canned or cooked bamboo shoots to a mixed vegetable soup that includes chicken, carrots, cabbage, onions and garlic. Cut the shoots into thin slices before adding to the soup.
Step3
Create a spinach and bamboo salad with this recipe. Heat some peanut oil in a skillet and add the washed spinach. When the spinach wilts, add thinly sliced bamboo shoots, salt and pepper. Remove from the skillet and serve.
Step4
Make an easy scalloped dish with bamboo. In a greased baking dish add cooked bamboo. Prepare a sauce by combining butter, flour, salt, grated cheese and milk, cook this in a saucepan until the sauce thickens. Pour the mixture over the bamboo and bake at 350 F degrees for 35 minutes.

Cook bamboo shoots and add to a chili sauce. Heat some sesame oil in a skillet and sauté mashed ginger and garlic. Add sliced bamboo shoots, sliced green pepper and red chili, soy sauce, rice vinegar, water and sugar. Let the sauce cook a bit. Stir well and serve.

Add cooked shoots to beef or pork stir fries and many vegetable combination dishes.
