Instructions

  1. Registration and Audition Process

    • 1

Determine whether you are eligible to audition and compete on the show. You must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S., and be between 15-28 years old. You cannot have any contractual agreement as a musician, actor or other talent personality. You cannot participate if you are a relative or know someone who is associated with the show.

    • 2

Select the audition city you are planning to visit. Determine whether you will be auditioning at more than one location, and the dates and times of the events, so you can plan your trip and expenses accordingly.

    • 3

Book hotel reservations in case you are traveling a great distance. Set aside enough money for food and necessities you will need on your trip. The "American Idol" audition process may take place over a number of days, so it is important to have accommodations reserved ahead of time.

    • 4

Decide what type of transportation you will be using. If you are driving or being driven by a friend, determine the cost of gas to and from all locations. Estimate costs for trains, bus rides or airplane tickets if you are not traveling by car.

    • 5

Arrive early for registration and bring two forms of identification, such as a birth certificate and driver's license. Registration may occur a day or two before auditions take place. At registration, you will be given a wristband and a ticket for an assigned seat at the auditions. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian throughout the registration and audition process.

    • 6

Line up for auditions as early as permitted. Make sure you have all identification records, your wristband, seat ticket and the release form that verifies your agreement with the terms of the competition process.

    • 7

Wear appropriate and comfortable clothing that does not display offensive content, designer brand names or copyrighted images. Eat before getting in line; if you leave the line to grab a bite, you will lose your place and have to go the end of the line.

    • 8

Practice the two or three songs you have chosen to sing a cappella. Be aware that large crowds may prevent you from auditioning; "American Idol" producers can decide whether or not you can audition.
