How to Create a Punky Brewster Costume
Punky Brewster was that special orphan who made her way into the hearts of everybody in the mid 1980s. She was the wild child with the heart of gold. Portrayed by Soleil Moon Frye, Punky Brewster became a phenomena. The sitcom was followed by a cartoon, and dolls and toys of all kinds were released based upon the character. She was an icon of a generation in no time, and children proudly wore Punky shoes, carried Punky lunch boxes and shouted out "Punky Power."
Things You'll Need
- Brunette wig
- Sun barrettes or yellow ribbons
- Blue jeans
- Blue shirt
- Vest
- Sneakers (two different colors)
- Boa
- Punky Brewster DVD (optional)
Instructions
-
-
1
Put your hair in two pigtails. Punky style is fun and funky.
-
2
Add ribbons or barrettes in the shape of the sun to your hair. Punky may have an eccentric sense of style, but she cares about fun in her style.
-
-
3
Put on a pair of blue jeans. There is no need to get fancy. Punky is probably just hanging out with Henry and Brandon (her lovable dog).
-
4
Put on a simple light blue shirt that has long sleeves.
-
5
Layer a pink vest on top of the blue shirt. It should have pockets. Add some flair to the vest by adding some cute pins. If you have any retro pins from the era that have Punky Brewster slogans, that is even better.
-
6
Put on a boa. Bright pink works best, but other colors will do. Punky loved looking funky.
-
7
Wear two different colored shoes and two different colored socks. It was part of Punky's fashion statement to wear different colored shoes and socks.

Tips & Warnings
Watch some episodes of the sitcom before dressing up as Punky. You should get refreshed about how she acted and what her main slogans were.
Don't worry about your age. Anybody can dress like Punky if she is young at heart.

You did a good job of describing her and her attire. However you forgot one major thing about her style. The bandana wrapped around her right leg. Who is going to NOT know who you are if you have that bandana! :-) Also I would maybe suggest getting a stuffed animal of a Golden Retriever (or Labrador close enough for a costume) and carry it with you for the night! This is something I thought long and hard about doing for Halloween for many years now as I was constantly told when I was younger that I looked just like her! I won't do the costume unless I can get it just perfect though!! :-) Your article is good though, for anyone that may not have been reminded of how she looked back then. Good job! -
