Origami is the ancient Japanese art of paper folding that manipulates one sheet of paper into an intricate figurine. Unlike many origami designs, this particular origami monkey can be used as a dual toy and decoration piece. There are several different ways to make an origami monkey, some are very complex figures that even the master paper folders have difficulty completing, while this simple design can be learned and manipulated in a matter of minutes.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Origami paper (optional)
  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Flat surface
Step1
Make a square piece of paper. If you’re using origami paper, the paper will already likely be a perfect square. If you’re using computer or typing paper, you’ll need to modify it to a square. You can do this by folding the paper into a triangle and cutting off the excess edge.
Step2
Fold it in half. Fold the paper into two triangles. First take the right bottom edge and fold it to meet the left top edge. Unfold and then repeat on the opposite side.
Step3
Squash fold your paper into a diamond. Using the creases you have made take the top point, left point and right point together, squashing them down onto the bottom point, so that you have a small diamond.
Step4
Make the monkey. Cut the top triangle off of your diamond and set this piece aside. This is your monkey.
Step5
Make the tree. Fold the bottom point up to make a flap and repeat on the other side. You should have two parallel, split legged, points facing down. Now you have your origami monkey and his tree.
Step6
Make your monkey climb. To see the monkey in action, place him between the two parallel bottom legs of the tree, like a key. Keep the legs together and slide them up and down, like a pulley, and watch your monkey climb.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make each crease strong and distinct in order to help guide you through the design.
  • Origami paper is a great tool for paper folding projects because of it has opposite color side that help to distinguish between which side is up.
