    Instructions

Identify the addiction. The best way to deal with any addiction is to identify what it is. Without knowing what type of addiction you're facing, you cannot battle it and save your marriage. Look at the signs and seek help finding out what you're up against.

Be honest about the addiction. Ignoring an addiction will not make it go away. Be honest about its presence and you can then start to seek help. If you turn your back on it, it will reach a point where it won't be ignored or defeated.

      • 3

Seek counseling. Getting professional help is key when dealing with addictions. Seek a therapist who can address both the addiction and the stress that has been put on the marriage. If you can't get the addicted partner involved, go to counseling yourself and see what they can suggest. One person can still make a difference.

Seek intervention. After you meet with a counselor, if the addiction is still growing and shows no signs of being dealt with, consider an intervention of family and friends. Speak with your counselor before bringing others in to help deal with the addict's problem.

Communicate with your spouse. Talking with your spouse is not only important during a regular marriage, but instrumental during a stressful one dealing with an addiction. Reinforce your relationship and emotional connections during these tough times.
