How to Rent a Lear Jet

Learjet is a company based in Wichita, Kansas which manufactures the high-performance Lear jet 31A light business jet, the transcontinental Lear jet 60 business jet and the Lear jet 45.Industrialist William Powell Lear was responsible for the development of the Lear Jet, the first private jet. Today, Lear jet is a part of Bombardier Inc., a Canadian aviation conglomerate. If you are considering a jet, you might be surprised how easy it can be. You will not be hassled with long security lines, cancellations and delays. It may cost you a couple thousand dollars an hour to rent a Lear jet, but some say it is worth every penny.

Instructions

    • 1

Conduct a search on the Internet for rent a private Lear jet. Several companies from which you can rent a Lear Jet are Netjets, Flight Options, Flexjets and smaller charter companies at individual airports. You will get several listings to choose from. Some of these companies are listed in the "additional resources" section below. Aside from Lears, there are other options in planes. Deciding which Lear jet will be done when you figure out the distance and how much you intend to pack on board.

    • 2

Choose three to four companies to call to inquire about renting a Lear jet. Prices and amenities will vary. Some will include catering, other will include cost of fuel and landing fees in their charges. These all need to be spelled out ahead of time. The fees charges by airports for landing and handling aircraft are non-negotiable but you may be able to get other fees reduced that are charged by the charter company.

    • 3

Call the nearest F.B.O, or fixed base operator, near you to see if they rent Lear jets. You may be able to rent a Lear jet directly from the local airport versus using the Internet search. These will include a crew and insurance. Both are mandatory unless you are type rated in a Lear jet, have a relationship with the FBO and have rented and flown with them before. If you go this route you will need to provide your own insurance and co-pilot if one is necessary. If you intend to fly it yourself, insurance and all other fee's will be yours to bear, including airport fees from your destination.

    • 4

Inquire with the rental company if they supply the catering, fuel and crew for the price they quote you. You don't want to be stuck with any surprise charges at the conclusion of your trip. On top of the airports fees, insurance, and the crews, other fees may crop up and need to be discussed, such as if you go over your alloted rental time and diversions to other destinations.

    • 5

Ask the company if they will arrange for the crews lodging and food during your trip. This is important as there are additional fees to be spent. Crews can do a drop off and pick up or stay for the trip, at which point you will need to provide food and accommodations for the crew for the entire stay. Once all this is worked out, arrive and hour early to get everything packed and weighed, all documents (passports, credit cards, etc) in order and passengers accounted for. Once this is all done, enjoy. Let them do the flying!

Tips & Warnings

  • Save money by renting with others who may have similar travel plans. You can participate in fractional ownership which allows you to share access to a private Lear jet.

  • Ask to see the safety records of the plane and crew before renting the Learjet.
