Autodesk's Maya is a famous animation program used to create both animations and 3D models. The software supports both scripting and manual manipulation, and is designed to cause "intelligent" movement when a model is moved. There is a free version of Autodesk Maya for anyone to download.

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows PC
  • Maya software
  • Instruction manual
  1. Step 1

The computer you use to run Maya must be loaded with Microsoft Windows XP or Vista. It should have higher-end specs than an average computer. A minimum of 1GB of RAM and a 1.6GHz processor is needed; 2GB of memory and a 4GHz CPU is ideal.

  2. Step 2

Download the Maya software. Autodesk offers a free version of Maya for anyone to download. The free version has all the features of the standard version. The only difference between the two is the license. The free version of Maya has a personal-use-only license, while the standard version can be used for commercial works. The free version places a watermark over the rendered video.

  3. Step 3

To learn the functions and features of Maya, you need official documentation. Autodesk offers a documentation PDF on the product website. To learn the actual method of creating animations and models, you will need to purchase an animation manual. These manuals are available through websites like Amazon and in retail stores.

  4. Step 4

College is an excellent resource for learning Maya. Many computer-animation courses cover Autodesk software and will provide hands-on experience. Local community colleges, technical schools and universities are likely to have the classes. Online college classes are ideal for those who can't commute.

  5. Step 5

Rendered animations can be shared online with fellow animators or the general public. My Toons is an excellent website where animators can upload and share their animations in high definition. There is no charge to create an account and upload videos.

Tips & Warnings
  • If an animation is uploaded to the web, a Creative Commons copyright should be included with the video.
  • The free version of Maya is only for personal use.
