You can recycle many of the inkjet and toner cartridges we use in printers, copiers and fax machines. You can sell the empties and get store credit or cash--and it's not pennies, either. Commonly used inkjet cartridges are worth about $3 each and some high-end toner cartridge empties will bring more than $20. There are several ways to sell used toner cartridges. Charities and nonprofit groups can raise money by collecting used toner and inkjet cartridges and selling them to be recycled.

Find out if your used toner cartridges are a type that recyclers will accept. Cartridges that are worth money are those that have a built-in print head. This includes Hewlett-Packard (HP), Lexmark and Dell inkjet cartridges. For other brands, you should look on the box or the instructions that came with the cartridge.

Sell your used toner cartridges by exchanging them for a discount on new toner cartridges at office supply stores. For example, Staples will give you $3 off the purchase of a new cartridge in exchange for each used one. They also have a convenient "Inkdrop" mail program. Put the used ink cartridge in the prepaid mailing container that's provided and drop it in the mail. Get store credit on any purchase at office supply merchants. For example, Office Depot redeems eligible ink and toner cartridges for $3 in store credit. Recycle up to 20 cartridges per month (any ink and toner brand).

Sell used toner cartridges for cash through an online buyer. There are several online companies that purchase used toner cartridges outright. One example is TonerBuyer.com. It pays about $3 for low-end cartridges and up to more than $20 for the most expensive models. You must include a packing slip that lists the contents of what you send.

Raise funds for charity, school groups or any worthwhile cause by organizing or participating in a recycling drive to collect and sell used toner cartridges. Office Depot supports fundraising projects and pays directly for cartridges collected as fundraising for charity. You can go to its website to contact the store and set up a fundraiser. TonerBuyer.com also supports fundraising projects, as do a number of other online and office supply companies.
