How to Restore Deleted Files on a Mac

It used to be that once you delete files from your computer and empty the recycle bin, your files were gone forever, with no hope of return. For the Mac computers of today, however, there are a variety of restore options, provided you have backed up your files prior to your need of recovering them. There are also several third-party applications that you can use that provide similar results and services.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Leopard with Time Machine
  • Mac membership
  • Third-party application
Step1
Use Time Machine. All Apple computers bought after November 2007 are already loaded with the latest OS, which is Leopard. Time Machine is part of Leopard, which is a program that will restore your files with ease. Just open the application and travel back to the point where you want to access your file, then click "Restore" and it will automatically be placed to its original folder prior to being removed or deleted.
Step2
Use Backup if you're a Mac member, which allows you to back up your files to a hard drive, a CD/DVD or iDisk. Select a backup plan in the Backup window, select the files you want to restore and click "Restore." You have the option to have a system back up which will allow you to restore all the files in the back up or just those files that you have selected.
Step3
Use File Salvage or Data Backup 3, which allow you to backup, restore and synchronize data easily (see Resources below). Open the application and select the settings to your liking, and later it will allow you to travel back to see where your files and directories are. Schedule your backups through the program and also add extra options such as backing up to a hard drive to protect your files.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although some programs may extensively search your computer for files that you want to restored, it is not guaranteed that your file can be recovered without proper backup. It is safe to have a separate hard drive entirely used for backing up your files. This will make it easy to recover your files later, and you don't have to worry whether or not there is hope for recovering your files again.
