Instructions

    • 1

Wear black tights. Edie's infatuation with black tights went so far that Life magazine, in 1965, referred to her as "the girl in the black tights." Black tights were her trademark, and she paired them with anything she could imagine, usually shift dresses and skirts.

    • 2

Add sheath dresses to your wardrobe. Edie wore sheath dresses, usually in a basic color (such as black or white). When you emulate this look, make sure your sheath dresses are short as to accentuate legs. Edie had long legs and liked to emphasize them.

    • 3

Wear bold jewelry. Dangling earrings were almost always a part of Edie's outfits. The bigger and longer the earrings, the better. The gaudiness of her jewelry choices perfectly complemented the simplicity of her dark colored dresses and tights. The more bohemian and "gypsy" the earrings look, the more "Edie" you look.

    • 4

Cut your hair short. Edie always had a boyish pixie cut and her hair was bleached blonde. Without the platinum cropped hairstyle, you will not capture Edie's vibe, so dare to be daring, like Edie, and cut your hair short.

    • 5

Wear thick black eyeliner. As with many of the other 1960s sirens, Edie was known for her dark-lined eyes. Be sure to apply your eyeliner with a thick, coal black eyeliner (the thicker the pencil the better). Liquid eyeliner is also a good idea, but make sure you have a steady hand.

Tips & Warnings

  • Think carefree, flirtatious, young, and sexy when you dress like Edie Sedgwick. The pairing of extremes is what made her style so iconic. She wore simple attire combined with the outrageous accessories.

  • Edie Sedgwick was also known for having thick eyebrows. Stop plucking your eyebrows for a while if you want to look authentically Edie. She made thick eyebrows famous before Brooke Shields brought them back in the early 1980s.
