Whether you need software to help you prepare an annual tax return or some type of software that will allow you to calculate taxes for your home business for quarterly payments, the good news is that free tax software exists that will do the job. Here are some things to keep in mind as you locate and download the free software.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Assess your computer system. This means identifying the size of your hard drive, the amount of available RAM and the type of operating system that is in place. Knowing what your computer will handle in the way of software programs will help you to identify software that is compatible with your system.

  2. Step 2

Determine what you need the software to accomplish. By deciding whether you need help with annual returns or something to help with calculating taxes for regular payments, you will narrow your search to the right types of programs.

  3. Step 3

Confirm the system requirements relevant to the free tax software you find. A given version may not be compatible with your operating system or require more resources than your computer has available. Verify that the software is compatible before initiating the download.

  4. Step 4

Turn off firewalls during the download. This will not deactivate your security settings, but it will ensure that the firewall does not interfere with the download.

  5. Step 5

Initiate the download. This will normally involve clicking on a download icon, then designating a destination for the download. Consider placing the downloaded file on your desktop, so it can be easily retrieved for the installation phase.

  6. Step 6

Once the download is complete, install the software. This is usually accomplished by clicking on the downloaded package and following the instructions for the installation.

  7. Step 7

Make a backup disk. Before removing the downloaded file from your hard drive, copy the file onto a floppy disk or a CDR. This way, you will not have to download the file a second time if your hard drive crashes at a later date.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are still using an older computer with less resources and a dial up connection, be prepared to have limited choices in software and also to put up with a long download time.
  • Always investigate any type of free software thoroughly before downloading. You want to make sure the software has a decent reputation and also that the download will not open you to all types of spyware, adware or other electronic pests.
