Things You'll Need:
- Moving van
- Dolly
- Moving blankets
- Rope
- Some strong people to help you load
-
Step 1
Get the right equipment for the job. A moving van with a ramp helps tremendously. Loading from a loading dock has the same effect. If can't get either one, look for a van with the lowest load height. The higher you need to lift the harder your work will be. Also be sure to get the appropriate dolly for the job as well as moving blankets and rope to protect and secure your load.
-
Step 2
Hire the appropriate help. If you are moving something heavy get help. Two additional movers can handle just about any job. It is not worth getting hurt or breaking something just to save a few bucks on labor.
-
Step 3
Lift correctly. Wear lifting belts and be sure your back is straight when loading. Use your legs when picking things up. You will get more power and avoid injury.
-
Step 4
Pack well. Loading a van is like piecing together a giant three dimensional jigsaw puzzle. Put in the largest items first. Be sure to protect them with moving blankets. Medium objects that can rest on top of the heavy items go next. Always keep "chowder" or small items around to throw on top and fill in spaces. Repeat this process as you work your way toward the door.

Step 5
Secure your cargo. If something can move it will move in transit. Use rope to secure your load to the sides of the moving van. If something is fragile secure it between soft items. Glass fits nicely between two mattresses.
