How to Survive When Lost in the Cold Mountains

ALWAYS tell someone where you are going. Leaving a plan for your trip into the mountains will be helpful in case you get lost. Don't travel alone.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Compass
  • Suitable clothing
  • Your cell phone
  • Matches or a lighter
  • Food and water
Step1
DO NOT PANIC. If you left your plans with someone, search and rescue teams will most likely be looking for you. Usually, these teams search only during daylight hours for adults, but will look round the clock for children.
Step2
FIND SHELTER AS SOON AS YOU CAN, AND TRY TO STAY WARM AND DRY. Try to use an existing natural shelter. Trying to build something could make you exert yourself unnecessarily, causing you to sweat which will make you colder.
Step3
SIGNAL RESCUERS FOR HELP. The best time to signal rescuers is during the day, and the best place is from the highest point. But don't wander far from where you became lost. It will make it more difficult for the rescuers to find you.
Step4
Of course, if your cell phone gets a signal in the mountains, and they sometimes do, call for help. Your cell phone will act like a tracking device and rescuers will find you quickly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always check to see if your cell phone gets reception. It can help to lead the rescuers to you.
  • Always take some food and water with you when hiking in the mountains.
  • Preferably, have a hiking buddy.
  • Hiking alone can be dangerous. Consider taking a hiking buddy with you.
