Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Situations in which you might make a Securité call (prounounced secure e
tay, are non emergency situations where there are potential navigational hazards such as a boat sitting in a fog bank or a floating object that could be struck by other boats.
Place your radio on low power so as to only reach other boats near the hazard.
Step2
To make a securité call switch to channel sixteen and speak clearly and say the word three times followed by your vessel name and a description of the hazard. "Securité, Securité, Securité, This is the sailing vessel Snook, reporting a floating log in the middle of the ship channel forty meters north of marker number seven". Pause and repeat the message one more times and indicate one of the recreational channels you will be listening for a reply if any listeners want a detailed description of the hazard.
Step3
"This is sailing vessel Snook standing by on channel six eight".
On some occasions the hazard may be you. If you are adrift but in no grave danger and help is on the way, or in the middle of a fog bank in busy waters you may want to repeat the Securité call every few minutes on low power to alert other vessels to your presence.
You may employ other techniques such as shining a bright light on your sail or flashing a light to warn oncoming boat that you are without power.
A securité call is a time tested way of alerting other boaters to hazards.
