How to Set Excel Macro Security to Medium

Microsoft Excel allows you to choose the level of security when using macros. By default, the macro security level is set to high, meaning only signed macros from trusted sources are allowed to run. With a security level of medium, not only can you remain safe but retain control over what you run.

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Open Microsoft Excel. Go to Start–Programs–Microsoft Office–Microsoft Office Excel. Please note that in some versions of Microsoft Office, you will Microsoft Office Excel straight from Programs.
Step2
Go to the Tools menu at the top of your Excel window.
Step3
Open the Tools menu and go to Macros.
Step4
Choose Security from the Macros menu.
Step5
Choose Medium from the Security Level tab. You also have the options of Very High, High, and Low. For most users High or Medium is best.
Step6
Click the OK button and restart Excel by closing the program and re-opening it. Your macro security level is now set to medium.

Tips & Warnings

  • Changing your security level is useful if you need more control over the macros you use.
  • Different versions of Microsoft Office may differ slightly from these instructions. This how-to works for Microsoft Office 2000 and Microsoft Office 2003.
  • Be careful when changing security settings. Having your settings too low may put you at risk for viruses.
