How to Write English Script Letters

English script lettering is a spiky, graceful way of writing that evokes images of 19th century England. While this method of writing looks incredibly difficult, it is, in fact, easy to do if you have some patience and an artistic eye.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Thin sheets of paper
  • Pencil
Step1
Find an example of English script letters that you like. There are countless different styles of script letters available. Go to the "Omniglot" website or look in a book dedicated to different writing styles to find a suitable set of English script letters that you can learn from.
Step2
Take a thin piece of paper and cover the alphabet you have selected. Make sure the paper is thin enough for you to clearly see through to the letters. Take a pencil and trace the alphabet. Get a feel for how these letters are created by tracing the alphabet several times, until you know the little dips and points that make them special.
Step3
Using a fresh sheet of paper and the original alphabet as a visual guide, begin drawing the English script letters by freehand. Take your time.
Step4
Begin spelling words using the letters. Spell a variety of words so you can practice the entire alphabet.
Step5
Repeat your tracing exercises if you feel your freehand work does not look enough like actual English script lettering. This is a complicated alphabet and will take more practice than you think to master.
