How to Write English Script Letters

You can learn to write English script letters.

English script lettering is a spiky, graceful way of writing that evokes images of 19th-century England. While this method of writing may look difficult, it is, in fact, easy to do if you have some patience and an artistic eye.

Things You'll Need

• Thin sheets of paper
• Pencil

Instructions

1. Find an example of English script letters that you like (see Resources).

2. Take a thin piece of paper and cover the alphabet you have selected; make sure the paper is thin enough for you to clearly see through to the letters.

3. Trace the alphabet with a pencil several times.

4. Using a fresh sheet of paper and the original alphabet as a visual guide, slowly and carefully draw the English script letters by freehand.

5. Write words using the letters. Use a variety of words so you can practice the entire alphabet.

Tips & Warnings

• Repeat your tracing exercises if you feel your freehand work does not look enough like English script lettering.
