While bath jelly is definitely something that can be made for, and used by, grownups, it can be even more fun to make and give to a child. Tuck a toy or trinket down inside of the jelly and your little dirt magnet might just start begging to take a bath.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1 packet of unflavored gelatin
  • 1/2 cup of liquid soap such as baby shampoo, hand soap or shower gel
  • 3/4 cup of water
  • Food coloring
  • Essential oil or fragrance oil
  • Mixing bowl
  • Saucepan
  • Jar with lid (plastic is best, if you are giving it to a child)

Step1
Open the packet of gelatin and pour it into the mixing bowl. Set the bowl of gelatin aside.
Step2
Pour the water into the saucepan and place on the stove on high heat. Bring to a rolling boil.
Step3
Pour the boiling water onto the gelatin powder in the bowl. Mix the gelatin and water using a wooden spoon or rubber or silicone spatula. Allow gelatin to dissolve completely.
Step4
Add the liquid soap to the gelatin. Mix gently with spoon or spatula. The soap should be thoroughly combined with the gelatin, but you don't want to agitate it and cause it to froth. Add several drops of essential or fragrance oil and just a couple drops of food coloring, and again, stir gently.
Step5
Pour the jelly into the lidded container and place it in the refrigerator to set. Allow it to set partially and then, if desired, place a toy, trinket or sea shell at the bottom of the jelly. Put it back inside the refrigerator and allow it to set completely. To use, place a small amount of jelly under running water when running a bath.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep the lid on the jar and keep bath jelly in a cool dry place.
  • Use jelly within a few weeks. If you view any mold, throw the jelly away immediately.
