Music companies sent the world a message through their lawsuit with Napster. It stated, “take our music for free and you’ll pay.” Well, thankfully, things have calmed down through the years. Now you can download free music and it’s through iTunes. Read on to learn how to legally download free music to a Mac.

        Open up iTunes. If you don’t have it yet, go to the iTunes website and download this application. You’ll see where to do this on the home page for the site. Just look to your right.

        Go to the Music Store in iTunes. You will find it on the side bar to the right of the iTunes’ application. It is the first listing under Store. Click on "iTunes Store."

        Find free music by searching for it. Use the search box at the upper right corner of the page. It will have a little magnifying symbol inside of it. Type “free music” into the search box and press “Enter.” It will take you to a new page. You can also look at the middle of the home page for the iTunes Store and you’ll also see featured free music.

        Select your free music. You will see a list of music towards the middle of the page that you can download for free. The good news is that it will also include music streams you can subscribe to for free. Under the tab" Price," click on the words “Subscribe” or “Free” in order to get your free music and download it to your Mac.

        Check your iTunes library to make sure the download to your Mac was successful. You can do that by going back to the left side bar and clicking on "Music" under the title "Library." It will bring you to a different screen that shows all of your music. Your download should be there. You can also scan down farther on the side bar and click on "Recently Added." It will bring up any new downloads as well.

    • Another way to get free music is to visit AOL Music and MySpace Music. Both offer free music to their Internet surfers and members.

    • Works on Windows computers as well as long as you are running iTunes.

    • Be sure that the words "FREE" are under the PRICE title or you will end up paying for music listed in the wrong area.
