Under normal driving conditions, you should change the filter and oil on the automatic transaxle of a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina Sedan every 30,000 miles. However, it is always a good idea to check the automatic transaxle fluid level each time you have the engine oil changed. If you discover the level is low, it will be necessary to add fluid.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A clean rag or paper towel
  • A Long-neck funnel.
  • Dextron III Automatic Transmission Fluid
  1. Step 1

With the engine still running, pull back on the hood release lever located under the dash to the left of the driver’s side. Lift the hood to its fully opened position.

  2. Step 2

Locate the automatic transaxle fluid dipstick near the back of the engine. It will have a red loop handle. Grasp the red loop handle and pull the dipstick straight out. Check the level of automatic transaxle fluid. If the fluid on the dipstick is below the cross-hatched area on both sides of the dipstick the automatic transaxle requires additional fluid.

  3. Step 3

Set the dipstick aside. Insert the small end of the long-neck funnel into the dipstick tube. Slowly pour a small amount of Dextron III Automatic Transmission Fluid into the wide end of the long-neck funnel. Allow the fluid to drain completely into the dipstick tube.

  4. Step 4

Remove the long-neck funnel from the dipstick tube. Place the rag or paper towel under the small end to prevent excess fluid from dripping on the hot engine. Set the long-neck funnel aside.

  5. Step 5

Wipe the dipstick clean with a clean rag or paper towel. Insert the dipstick into the dipstick tube and push all the way in. Wait 3 to 5 seconds. Pull the dipstick back out and check the fluid level. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until the proper level of automatic transaxle fluid is reached.

  6. Step 6

Push the dipstick all the way back into the dipstick tube. Close the hood. Dispose of the soiled rags or paper towels in an approved container.

Tips & Warnings
  • The vehicle must be running and operating at normal temperatures to get an accurate reading of automatic transaxle levels.
  • Drive the vehicle under normal conditions for 15 minutes prior to checking automatic transaxle fluid levels.
  • Operating the Chevrolet Lumina sedan with an improper amount of automatic transaxle fluid can permanently damage the vehicle.
