Applying the stencil is one of the most important steps in tattooing. Without a proper stencil, the tattoo will not be drawn accurately, which is not something you want to deal with when talking about a lifetime commitment.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Razor
  • Mild soap, such as Ivory
  • Petroleum jelly
  • Distilled water
  • Stencil pencil
  1. Step 1

Shave the area to be tattooed. Make sure to use a sharp razor to avoid nicking the skin.

  2. Step 2

Clean the area to be tattooed with a mild soap that won't leave any residue. Ivory soap is a good choice.

  3. Step 3

Draw the stencil using a stencil pencil or a stencil transfer if you are using a pre-made design. Make sure you allow the stencil to dry completely before moving to Step 4. Failure to let the stencil dry will result in smudging.

  4. Step 4

Apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly before proceeding to the actual tattooing. Petroleum jelly will protect the skin and the stencil as you wipe any blood away during the tattooing process.

Tips & Warnings
  • When wiping during tattooing, remember to only use distilled water, not tap water. Tap water can cause burning and stencil smudging.
