How to Raise Community Awareness for a Social or Charitable Cause

Create a SWOT analysis of the organization. This type of review analyzes the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. This will give an objective sense of where the organization stands and an idea of how to build a marketing plan.

      Develop a marketing plan. This will document the plan to implement strategies to overcome weaknesses and threats outlined in the SWOT analysis. It will also be an opportunity to capitalize on strengths and potential opportunities.

      Seek writers. Freelance writers are often looking for an opportunity to show their skills. Freelancers can be hired at a relatively low cost to create copy that promotes awareness of a social organization.

      Get out in the community. Nothing beats pounding the pavement and finding out what is going on the in area. Most communities have their own leaders who have built a reputation. Find out who these people are and communicate the issues of the social organization to this leader.

      Go to town meetings. Many of the issues in a community will be brought out during these meetings. Find out what the issues are and if the organization can partner with local citizens to resolve issues facing the community. This is also another opportunity to find out who the leaders of the communities are.

      Join message boards. Find boards that are dedicated to the specific cause. This may be a part of the writer’s job in Step 3. Make sure that comments on message boards don’t sound like press releases. Use factual data relaying the social issue that the organization is addressing.

      Become a member of the local Chamber of Commerce. The chamber will offer access to its many members and opportunities to interact with people in trade shows and at various events. This is another opportunity to form partnerships with groups that can complement the social cause that is being promoted.
