The use of herbs to aid relaxation is centuries old. Incorporating herbs with bath salts helps to relax the body and mind of tension and stress. The scent of certain herbs aids with relaxation. For the purpose of this article, we will cover how to make herbal bath salts for relaxation.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mortar and pestle
  • Bowl made from natural material (ie: wood)
  • 1/8 Cup sea salts
  • 1/4 Cup lavender
  • 1/4 Cup rowan
  • 1/4 Cup hyssop
  • Glass jar with lid
  • Medium size muslin drawstring bag (optional)
  1. Step 1

Using the mortar and pestle, individually grind the sea salts and each herb.

  2. Step 2

Place each ground ingredient in a bowl. Use your own discretion as to how fine you grind each ingredient (Grinding each herb helps to release the scent).

  3. Step 3

Mix the salts and herbs together by hand. Imbue the herbs with positive, relaxing energies.

  4. Step 4

Place the mixed herbs in a glass jar and affix the lid.

  5. Step 5

You may want to keep some medium size muslin bags handy. If you prefer, rather than pouring the bath salts directly into the bath, you can put some in a muslin drawstring bag, tie it closed and affix the bag to the faucet so that the water runs through the bag as the bath fills, or you can just place the bag in the bath.

  6. Step 6

Label the salts with the date and type. Store the salts away from moisture and direct sunlight.

Tips & Warnings
  • Other herbs which can be substituted: Basil, Rue, Thyme, Myrrh and Eucalyptus.
  • Adjust ingredient amounts to suit.
  • If making the bath salts for future use, add 1/8 cup of baking soda to the salts. (For larger amounts of salts increase the baking soda added to 1/4 cup.)
  • You may want to increase the amount for whichever herb you prefer for scent. Some herbs have the tendency to overpower others.
  • Sea salts are the traditional necessity for bath salts, though it may seem tempting do not replace the sea salts with epsom salts. Epsom salts tend to dry out the skin much more quickly than do sea salts.
