Instructions

    • 1

Clean anything that isn't fabric with pure vinegar (you can clean some fabrics with vinegar, but make sure to test first). While the smell of vinegar doesn't really appeal to most people any more than the smell of the smoke, at least the vinegar will eventually dissipate; the smoke smell won't.

    • 2

Sprinkle the carpet and furniture with baking soda. A light sprinkle of this will start to absorb the odors in the room. Wait a day and then vacuum the carpet and furniture. Repeat every week. This process will take time; if you don't want to wait, try step 3 instead.

    • 3

Rent a heavy-duty carpet cleaner. You can get these from your local hardware store. Clean the carpets thoroughly. It is amazing how much smell a carpet can hold and how dirty the water will be coming out of the carpet.

    • 4

Wipe down light fixtures, chandeliers and other mounted fixtures with ammonia. Again, this will be strong for a while, but will slowly go away along with the smell of smoke

    • 5

Collect all of the curtains, blankets, clothes and all other fabrics that can fit in a washing machine and wash them in small loads, otherwise the smell will remain in the fabrics. You may need to wash these items more than once to get the smell completely out.

    • 6

Clean the walls and ceilings. To do this, mix one gallon of warm water, half a cup of ammonia, quarter cup of vinegar and a quarter cup of washing soda. Apply this to the walls and ceilings with a sponge, and use clean solution whenever the old starts to look dirty.

Tips & Warnings

  • Open the windows of the house more often. This will allow the smells to lessen. Again, nothing will be cleaner, just less smelly.
