If you are a writer who writes a lot of articles that are placed on the Internet, it is imperative that you set up a Google Alert for yourself. You need to know how your articles are being rated and if your articles are showing up in places they shouldn't be showing up in. Every time your name is mentioned online, you'll know about it through Google Alerts. Follow these directions to set up a Google Alert.

Computer
Email address

Step 1

Open Google Alerts. Go to the link provided in the Resources section below.
Step 2

In the "Search Terms" box, type in your name or pen name.
Step 3

Decide what types of alerts you wish to have sent to you. Options include Alerts for "news items," "blog entries," "videos," "webs" and "comprehensive." If you choose "comprehensive," you will get an alert when your name is posted anywhere on the Internet.
Step 4

Decide how often you want to receive these alerts.
Step 5

Type in the email address you wish these alerts be sent to.
Step 6

Click the "Create an Alert" button once you are satisfied with your choices.
Step 7

Go to your email account (the one you choose to have the alerts sent to) and click on the verification notice.
Step 8

Begin watching as your name or pen name is circulated throughout the Internet.
