You can save money and reduce waste by refilling inkjet cartridges instead of replacing them. Since Hewlett-Packard has so many different types of cartridges, the exact refilling method can vary. However, there are some basic similarities.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure the surface you use is safe to possibly spill on. Cover it with paper towels or old rags that you don't mind getting toner on.

  2. Step 2

Use a clean, non-medical syringe to insert the fresh ink into the cartridge. If you bought an inkjet refill system, this should be included.

  3. Step 3

Locate the filling hole on the cartridge. It should be on the top or bottom and you often find it sealed with a ball bearing and a plastic film covering. Remove the covering with a penknife and push the ball bearing into the cartridge.

  4. Step 4

Insert the correct color ink into the cartridge with the syringe. If you're refilling black ink, use about 20 milliliters. For color ink, use 10 milliliters per chamber.

  5. Step 5

Reseal the filling hole if it is on the cartridge bottom. Make sure it's airtight. Squeeze the cartridge sides and insert the plug that should have come with the refill kit. A small amount of ink should drip from the print head.

  6. Step 6

Let the cartridge stand with the print head down for a couple of minutes before putting it back in the printer. This will draw out excessive ink and equalize pressure in the cartridge.

Tips & Warnings
  • Rinse the syringe with warm water and let it dry in between uses. This includes between refills of each color cartridge chamber.
  • If you don't have a plug to reseal the hole, try to fid the same size ball bearing to use. Insert it with care and cover it with electrical tape.
  • Buying a full refill kit is highly recommended. Along with the right equipment, it should also include a booklet showing exactly how to refill each specific cartridge.
  • Never touch the print head with your fingers. Your natural oils will damage it.
  • For the HP 51629A and 51629G cartridges (and similar styles), you must never pierce the top center hole. You must seal it completely airtight, insert the ink in the corner hole and reseal it. If there is no corner hole, you must make one.
