How to Find Pickup Services for Clothing Donation

You're ready to part with that beloved pair of jeans. They're used, but not used up. But, finding time to haul a pile of clothes to the donation center can be hard. The good news is that in many states, charities will come directly to you to pick up your donations of used clothes, shoes, and even household items.

Instructions

1. Make a phone call. If you'd like to donate clothes to the Salvation Army, call 1-800-95-TRUCK.

2. Hit the web. To donate clothes to the Vietnam Veterans of America, you need to visit their clothing donation website. From there you can access telephone numbers for pickup or even, in some states, schedule a pickup over the internet. You can also schedule Salvation Army pick ups through their "Make Donation" web page. The Military Order of the Purple Heart also schedules pickups over the internet.

3. Dig a little. Call nearby churches and senior centers, tell them you want to donate clothes, and ask if they have a donation pick up program. Ask at thrift shops; some local operations offer limited pickup services, especially for large quantities.

4. Freecycle it. If you can't find an established charity that wants to pickup your used clothes, donate them directly to someone through the Freecycle website. They're then responsible for making the pickup.

Tips & Warnings

• If you donate to a non-profit organization, whether it's a church, local charity, or local thrift shop, always ask for a receipt. You might get a tax deduction out of it.
