How to Use a USB Hard Drive on an Xbox

Gaining additional storage by installing a USB drive to the Xbox is great way to gain control of the gaming system. Adding a USB drive allows you to organize the music, games and images the way you prefer instead of the way Microsoft dictates. Installing a USB drive is simple to do and doesn't take much time.

Instructions

    • 1

Build or purchase a USB drive with enough storage to hold all of the data you want to carry. You can also build USB drives using the proper cable and any 2.5 or 3.5 hard drive and case. Verify the case includes a compatible cable for the hard drive.

    • 2

Format the drive to FAT64 using the format function of your Window PC. Drives larger than 32 gigs will require a third party formatting software. Windows 98 users are able to format drives up to 127 gigs but will also require third party software for larger drives.

    • 3

Load MP3s onto the drive in the file organization you prefer. Install images, video and games to run on the Xbox. All media except Xbox Live Marketplace content will work. Xbox Live Media content must reside on the original hard drive to use.

    • 4

Plug the USB drive into the USB 2.0 input on the Xbox and scan the content of the new drive. Test games and MP3 music to verify it's working properly.

    • 5

Share games, music and other content by plugging the USB drive into any Xbox. Pull legal media to the primary drive of the Xbox or play it directly from the USB drive.
